Orton Hall Gargoyles at Ohio State University

The gargoyles on the bell tower of Orton Hall are one of this Ohio State University building’s distinguishing features and, today, it is the Photo of the Day.

Orton Hall was built in 1893 and is one of the oldest buildings on the OSU campus.

It houses the Orton Geological Museum and has a number of exhibits including a full-sized replica of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull, a fluorescent mineral booth, meteorites and the skeleton of a giant ground sloth.

The gargoyles on the bell tower are actually fossil representations of extinct creatures that inhabited the primordial sea.

Another interesting fact is that Orton Hall was built using forty different stones native to Ohio.

The stones making up the exterior walls were laid in stratigraphic order, based on their order in Ohio’s bedrock.
